- How is it that the events of our lives don’t always seem to match up with the promises of God?
- It turns out that this is not just a personal struggle for a few, but one of the central themes of the Bible.

The problem with following God is that his words do not always seem to match up with his actions.
1. Habakkuk’s (and Abraham/Sarah’s) problem with God
Habakkuk 1:1–13
- The following is the message which God revealed to Habakkuk the prophet:
- How long, LORD, must I cry for help?
But you do not listen!
I call out to you, “Violence!”
But you do not intervene! - Why do you force me to witness injustice?
Why do you put up with wrongdoing?
Destruction and violence confront me;
conflict is present and one must endure strife. - For this reason the law lacks power,
and justice is never carried out.
Indeed, the wicked intimidate the innocent.
For this reason justice is perverted. - “Look at the nations and pay attention!
You will be shocked and amazed!
For I will do something in your lifetime
that you will not believe even though you are forewarned. - Look, I am about to empower the Babylonians,
that ruthless and greedy nation.
They sweep across the surface of the earth,
seizing dwelling places that do not belong to them. - They are frightening and terrifying;
they decide for themselves what is right. - Their horses are faster than leopards
and more alert than wolves in the desert.
Their horses gallop,
their horses come a great distance;
like a vulture they swoop down quickly to devour their prey. - All of them intend to do violence;
every face is determined.
They take prisoners as easily as one scoops up sand. - They mock kings
and laugh at rulers.
They laugh at every fortified city;
they build siege ramps and capture them. - They sweep by like the wind and pass on.
But the one who considers himself a god will be held guilty.” - LORD, you have been active from ancient times;
my sovereign God, you are immortal.
LORD, you have made them your instrument of judgment.
Protector, you have appointed them as your instrument of punishment. - You are too just to tolerate evil;
you are unable to condone wrongdoing.
So why do you put up with such treacherous people?
Why do you say nothing when the wicked devour those more righteous than they are?
So Habakkuk had a dilemma when he compared God’s Words with his Works – they didn’t seem to match up.
- In the time of Habakkuk the nation of Judah has become very corrupt,
yet God did not seem to be doing anything about it. - The prophet keeps crying to God but he does not seem to hear (v.2).
- God has said in his Word that he will judge evil-doersand save those who trust him,
- but in practice this does not seem to work out.
- We can experience times like this in our own lives.We would like our circumstances to be something like this:
- When this is the case, then being a Christian is easy.God’s promises all come true immediately.There is no reason to doubt.
- But what about when it looks more like this:
Abraham & Sarah
- The years went by. Abraham got older, Sarah was in her 80’s. No son. There seems to be a gap between the Words and the Works
- Faith bridges the gap between God’s Words and his Words
- But in Genesis 16 the faith weakens and Abraham decides he has to force the issue, and Ishmael is born.
- after Another 13 years more waiting...
- Still more time went by…
- Hebrews tells us that Sarah did believe, and she is one of the heros of faith
- Finally, after 25 years:
2. The answer that Habakkuk gets
- This theme comes up dozens of times in Scripture, because this test is the essence of faith.
- In 2:1 he has said his piece and he sets himself to wait for God’s answer
Habakkuk 2:1–2:4
- I will stand at my watch post;
I will remain stationed on the city wall.
I will keep watching, so I can see what he says to me
and can know how I should answer
when he counters my argument. - The LORD responded:
“Write down this message! Record it legibly on tablets,
so the one who announces it may read it easily. - For the message is a witness to what is decreed;
it gives reliable testimony about how matters will turn out.
Even if the message is not fulfilled right away, wait patiently;
for it will certainly come to pass — it will not arrive late. - Look, the one whose desires are not upright will faint from exhaustion,
but the person of integrity will live because of his faithfulness.
based on NET Bible
- Habakkuk’s third chapter is full of declarations of his firm faith. He says in Habakkuk 3:17–19:
It is only faith that can bridge this gap. I picture it like this:
- Abraham experienced it...
- David experienced it... Story of David…
- Have you ever had this experience. You feel like Habakkuk who said “Why, God, Why do you do this, how can you say one thing and do another?”
- You are tempted to doubt God. Satan comes up and whispers to you “God does not care”.
- This is what he did to Adam and Eve, he made them doubt God’s words, and he gave another explanation: “God does not really love you”.
- So how do we go about answering this problem?
3. Our problem with God
- How Jesus can enable this to be answered in our lives…
All of us WILL be tested
In 1 Peter 4:12–13 we read:
- When you are faced with this test, you have two choices
- Believe Satan’s lies and say “God, if there really is a God, doesn’t care about me”
- Recognize Satan’s lies for what they are.
- Why do we sometimes find it so hard to rest in God’s love?
- Some reasons...
- See this as a challenge and opportunity!
